If there is one thing I will never understand it is stores bringing out items for the next holiday, when the current one hasn't even happened yet. I think that the Halloween candy hit the shelves at my local Wal-Mart as of September first. Thanksgiving hasn’t even happened yet and here we are, surrounded by Christmas stuff.

This just in … this year’s presidential inauguration will be the biggest in U. S. history. They are pulling out all the stops and sparing no expense. It seems ironic to me that this county’s soon to be leader would spend gross amounts of money celebrating his new power and authority when the country is in a state of economic crisis… but that’s just me.

Utah State recently fired its head football coach as well as the rest of the football staff. Brent Guy was fired for not improving the football team enough for the amount of time he was here. Now the search begins for a new coach. Unless we can get some decent press, and spin our awful football program into a positive light I think we are going to see a pattern of hiring and firing coaches.

The more activities I participate in on campus the more I realize what a big impact marketing can have on an event. Unless the event is marketed well, and people are actually aware it is going on, it doesn’t matter if Brad Pitt and George Clooney are the main event, people won’t show up. There are some really fun events I would have loved to attend, if I had been aware they were going on.

Its official, Obama is sitting pretty. Unless the world comes to an end chances are in four years he is going to be able to look back and say to the country, we are much better off now than when I was first elected, so reelect me! Unless he messes up big time Obama has got eight years locked-in, no problem.

In a recent journalism class we discussed one of the newest waves of media/communication that is affecting PR as well as other types communication; Second Life. Second Life is a virtual, online program that allows people to create their own identity, aka avatar, and basically have a second existence. Apparently every major cooperation/business/organization has a Second Life presence. In fact Second Life is also apparently so big that if something negative occurs in the game, real companies and organizations could be affected by it in the real world.

Final: Position Paper

Currently Burger Planet is losing the demographic of women between the ages 30 to 40. Women in this category are becoming more health conscious. We propose that Burger Planet develop new options for our menu. In order to be thorough Jayne Petersen, fitness specialist, will become a part of the Burger Planet team.

• According to the Journal of Women's Health and Gender-Based Medicine 45 percent of women are currently on a diet. Women in their 30’ and 40’s are more likely to adapt a health regimen. This includes cutting out high-caloric foods. According to WebMD.com, women’s metabolism tends to decelerate by about 5 percent per decade after the age of 40. Due to a decrease in metabolism and other aging factors women in this demographic want healthier choices.

• We propose that Burger Planet use a public figure in order to attract this lost demographic. We feel that Jayne Petersen would be the perfect candidate. Petersen is an adviser to Opal Whitcomb and is nationally recognized as a fitness specialist. She has appeared on Whitcomb’s show, Opal Speaks, several times. Opal Speaks has won multiple Emmy Awards and is the highest-rated talk show in the history of television. Peterson has also published a bestseller on health and will also help develop healthy menu options for Burger Planet.

• It is important to keep the traditional Burger Planet menu, while also adding options that appeal to the health conscious demographic. When a thousand participants were surveyed on what they enjoyed most about fast food, 58 percent said they enjoyed the taste of the traditional burger and fries. By creating a more diverse menu women will have a convenient stop that provides healthier choices as well as Burger Planet’s infamous burger and fries.

We believe that by implementing the key point of this campaign Burger Planet will regain the demographic that has begun to diminish. With the return of these customer’s Burger Planet will see an increase in revenue and the company’s image will be refreshed.

Recent experience with a company (that shall remain nameless) has reminded me of one of the best, or possibly worst, types of PR: word of mouth. I know that none of my friends and family will ever use the services provided by this company due to the experience that I had with them. It is a reminder to companies to treat your customers well, they are the reason you are in business.

PR News

I was reading an article in PR Newsweek today about the job cuts happening in major publications such as Men’s Health, Sports Illustrated, and Fortune. The article states that executives are blaming the failing economy and a lack of advertising spending for the cut backs. Maybe those who are cut can get a job at Exxon Mobil that is doing so well.

PR News

I was reading an article that came out about Exxon Mobil and the record breaking profits they are making. It is interesting to me that they would be announcing the fact that they are sitting pretty while the rest of America has to choose to buy either food or gas. There is a PR disaster just waiting to happen … oh wait its already happening.
